The theory behind mob mentality and how it evolves is mostly related to group dynamics and the individual blending within a group. It was first proposed by Le Bon by saying that being in a group can cause people within it to gain excitement for themselves and therefore create a stimulus of behaviours that a person would not typically engage in if alone. A group creates the idea that some behaviours are acceptable when they otherwise wouldn’t be. Usually the bigger the mob, the more the individual loses his/ her self awareness and becomes more willing to be involved in unacceptable or dangerous behaviours. People are more likely to break social norms and engage in violence if they know it can not be traced back to them. In addition being part of a large crowd provides the individual with an immense sense of power.
